Got a rip, tear or hole in your kite sail? Tedlar Tape is the magical and ultimate sail repair tape. Once applied, Tedlar Tape is virtually invisible from the front of the kite, immune to UV rays from the sun and makes your kite look new again. Tedlar Tape will repair Mylar tears as well as fabric. Tedlar Tape is sold by the yard. Tedlar is a hi-tech adhesive film used in the aerospace industry to protect surfaces from Ultraviolet radiation. Tedlar does not not fade, crack or yellow in the sun and it has a very aggressive adhesive which creates a permanent and almost invisible bond on kite sails. Tedlar Tape has many applications and can be used on rips, tears and holes in both cloth and Mylar sail panels. HWK offers Tedlar Tape in 1” wide strips by the yard or by the roll. Call 805-654-0900 for roll prices.
Tip for applying: first, clean the area to be patched, both front and back and completely dry it. Next, cut two strips of Tedlar tape that are at least 1/2 inch wider and longer than the damaged area on all sides. Round the corners so that you have continous edges all around the tape patches. Next, align the rip/tear/hole by bringing all the edges together and cut away all strings of loose material. Carefully apply masking tape over the rip/tear/hole on the front side of the sail. Make sure you've kept the torn edges together and smooth all of the wrinkles and bubbles and then apply a Tedlar Tape patch to the back side of the sail. Burnish the Tedlar Tape patch using your thumb or finger until the patch is heated from the friction of your rubbing. Remove the masking tape from the front and place the second Tedlar Tape patch on the front of the sail. That's it, your done and good to go. If in the future the patch should ever come loose from the sail, burnish it until the heat reseals the patch.
